HLTPAT010 - Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing


The course applies to individuals who are involved in collecting specimens for drugs of abuse testing. It will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare the individual and equipment as well as collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation and Australian/ New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. This course is beneficial for individuals working in collection centres, hospitals, other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing take place.

Where collection activities take place in a clinical workplace, all activities must be supervised by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours per fortnight for at least 12 months, to ensure patient safety.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face face-to-face contact time of at least 8 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills.
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Follow detailed procedures, maintain accuracy when completing tasks in the correct order, and apply feedback to improve my performance.
    • Reading: Read and interpret technical procedures, individual information, infection control requirements, and chain of custody documentation to complete tasks accurately.
    • Writing: Accurately complete both familiar and unfamiliar workplace forms and records using clear and appropriate terminology.
    • Oral communication: Communicate clearly with individuals and colleagues, ask relevant questions, and use appropriate workplace terminology when required.
    • Numeracy: Accurately measure specimen volumes, check dates and reference information, and record numerical details independently.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Performance tasks:

  • Collect a urine specimen for drugs of abuse testing (non-compliant client)
  • Collect an oral fluid specimen for drugs of abuse testing (tampered specimen - problem-solving)
  • Collect a breath specimen for drugs of abuse testing

Documentation: 

  • Chain of custody forms for a urine specimen, oral fluid specimen, and a breath analysis specimen

Theory assessment -  A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions
